On October 1, 1908, the University of Minnesota Board of Regents authorized the establishment of a nursing program as part of the University's curriculum. The school opened in March 1909, graduating its first class in 1912. In 1919, a five-year program leading to a baccalaureate degree in nursing began. Ida Marie Sather Martinson was born on November 8, 1936. She earned her B.S. in 1960 and M.N.A. in 1962 from the University of Minnesota. In 1972, she earned her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. Dr. Martinson joined the staff at the University of Minnesota in 1972 as a lecturer in the department of physiology and director of research and assistant professor in the school of nursing.
